Here goes nothing. The top three have been pretty stable for quite some time - at least I think so. People who know me might disagree with that...
- Motorpsycho
After discovering them in 1993, I never let them out. They are locked in my Demon Box, and even when they went more pop in the early 2000s - and when they lost the mighty Gebhardt - I still stuck with them, like the other other fool... - The Beatles
No band is better. No band has ever been better. No band will ever be better. That Motorpsycho is above them on the list is simply a matter of taste - and it is by a hair. The most influential band ever - and with some of the most influential composers in the history of music. - David Bowie
His life was a work of art. Sure, he has his fair share of duds - but those were the records he didn't pour his heart and soul in (and yes, I am thinking about Tonight and Never Let Me Down here), but man, what an artist.
I think the rest of my top 10 probably looks like this, although it is really hard to distinguish between these fine artists/musicians:
- Rush
- Opeth
- Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree
- Frank Zappa
- King Crimson
- U2
- Pink Floyd
- Richard Thompson
- Baroness
- Slayer
- The Rolling Stones
- Pearl Jam
- Soundgarden
- Faith No More
- Nick Cave (with and without his Bad Seeds)
- Deep Purple
- Nine Inch Nails
- DumDum Boys
- Enslaved
- Elvis Costello
- Iron Maiden
- Chris Stapleton
These last 15 are not in any order, but they have all released music I really enjoy listening to. And the list has changed again... Rush is now bubbling right under the top 3, and while I would be hard pressed to really defend my order of 5-10, my top 4 is pretty firm. That being said, I have started to realize that Motorpsycho might be losing some of their luster with me - I find myself going back to 1993-1998 with them more than their recent works - and I find myself deeper and deeper into the Beatles. I am keeping the order for now, but might very well change it again... And while I love Richard Thompson and Baroness, U2 and Pink Floyd seem to always bounce back, so they are back in my top 10 list...

I am also very much into music, however, my tastes are a bit different than yours. I really like what you said about The Beatles being your favorite band, but having to place Motorpsycho above them. I feel the exact same way about The Monochrome Set, an English band that has been my bread and butter of music for decades. I realize that they really don't compare with The Beatles, but I feel a more personal connection with The Monochrome Set, thus I've probably actually listened to them more. Fun to read how others view music/life! Frank
