Favorite Bands/Artists

I thought I'd create a more permanent page listing my favorite bands/artists - and trying to do so in some sort of ordered fashion. I have to admit that it's really difficult to do, but I still think it is possible to at least order my top 5 or top 10. I will come back in and edit this as my tastes change over time - at least that's my plan...

Here goes nothing. The top three have been pretty stable for quite some time - at least I think so. People who know me might disagree with that...
  1. Motorpsycho
After discovering them in 1993, I never let them out. They are locked in my Demon Box, and even when they went more pop in the early 2000s - and when they lost the mighty Gebhardt - I still stuck with them, like the other other fool...
  2. The Beatles
No band is better. No band has ever been better. No band will ever be better. That Motorpsycho is above them on the list is simply a matter of taste - and it is by a hair. The most influential band ever - and with some of the most influential composers in the history of music.
  3. David Bowie
His life was a work of art. Sure, he has his fair share of duds - but those were the records he didn't pour his heart and soul in (and yes, I am thinking about Tonight and Never Let Me Down here), but man, what an artist.
I think the rest of my top 10 probably looks like this, although it is really hard to distinguish between these fine artists/musicians:
  1. Opeth
  2. Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree
  3. King Crimson
  4. Richard Thompson
  5. Frank Zappa
  6. Baroness
  7. Rush
I also think it could be helpful to list 15 additional bands/artists - but not ranked. Call them my bubblers - or whatever else sounds good - these are great musicians/bands that absolutely deserve your time of day:
  • Slayer
  • U2
  • Pink Floyd
  • The Rolling Stones
  • Pearl Jam
  • Soundgarden
  • Faith No More
  • Nick Cave (with and without his Bad Seeds)
  • Deep Purple
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • DumDum Boys
  • Enslaved
  • Elvis Costello
  • Iron Maiden
  • Chris Stapleton
These last 15 are not in any order, but they have all released music I really enjoy listening to. And some from this list has just moved down - U2, for instance, which for the longest time would have belonged in my top 10, fell out of it because I think they have lost their creative spark - but then again the could belong up there because of their Innocence + Experience tour. Rush is almost out of the list, but their last studio album saved them. Baroness is new to top 10, but I really love their music - they do really interesting stuff. And Chris Stapleton is the lone country representative in my top 25 - but his one solo album is just SO good.

I am also very much into music, however, my tastes are a bit different than yours. I really like what you said about The Beatles being your favorite band, but having to place Motorpsycho above them. I feel the exact same way about The Monochrome Set, an English band that has been my bread and butter of music for decades. I realize that they really don't compare with The Beatles, but I feel a more personal connection with The Monochrome Set, thus I've probably actually listened to them more. Fun to read how others view music/life! Frank
